Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey’s assault on Houston and other areas in Texas. September 6 is the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Irma’s attack on St. Maarten. Many areas in Texas have recovered well from Harvey, while others haven’t. And while these two anniversaries are remembered, Hawaii is bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Lane. Continue reading
Jim Rohn, considered by many as America’s greatest business philosopher, said many things worth remembering. His quote, “Work hard at your job and you can make a living. Work hard on yourself and you can make a fortune,” is on my mind lately. I am writing a book on Change, and the change that I am writing about is changing me. The stimulus for this latest change effort of mine was several major experiences in 2017, the latest of which was living through Hurricane Irma when it hit St. Maarten on September 6, 2017. A quote that came to me during that major life experience was, “When I thought I was going to die, I decided to really live.” What “really live” means for me is still evolving. I have, however, made several changes that make my life more satisfying. More about those later. This post isn’t really about me, or my latest book. She works in a bar and grill at Oak Island during the summer while she is out on college break. Mike and I had recently met her there. I learned that she previously worked at a local restaurant. Mike and I had been to that restaurant for dinner the night before this conversation. It is one of my favorite restaurants on the island. So, it was interesting to get her perspective on her previous employer. Her statements said it all.

We all have expectations, although perhaps we should not. Expectations that are not met can result in us being disappointed. A friend of mine states, “Expect Nothing, and you won’t be disappointed!” (Credit to Jennifer; last name omitted to protect the guilty!) But what are expectations? Most of us have just finished celebrating the 4th of July, and time with family and friends. Since the holiday fell in the middle of the week, many could not travel for there was only one day of the holiday, unless personal time off was included. Given the schedule, neither of our daughters and their families could be with us at the beach. So, Mike and I took our elder statesman Uncle Barry with us to the beach for the week. We had a wonderful time. We never take our time with Uncle Barry for granted, for at his soon to be 88 years of age, we know he will not live forever. But then again, given his energy and zest for life, he might! We can all learn a lesson from Uncle Barry about how to appreciate every day, take nothing for granted, and be grateful for whatever is given to you. Continue reading
Another 4th of July has come and gone. Many are still celebrating at the beach or mountains, or in their backyards. Whatever fun and festivities this week has held for you, I hope that you have enjoyed the holiday. This is one of the weeks in the summer that many of us slow down, barbecue with family and friends, and enjoy the bounty of our country.
In just a few short days, 2018 will be half over. Amazing. Yes, amazing, but true. Perhaps it is time to do a quick analysis of how the year is going so far. For if we have not yet accomplished or done what we wanted to do at the first of the year, we still have time to course correct. But not much time, only six more months. And we know how fast time flies, especially when fall comes and the holidays kick into high gear. So maybe with July and August bearing down on us, we can make some progress with changes we have said we want to make.
